A Conversation with John Fugelsang: Faith, Democracy and the Separation of Church and State

Across the country, the line between religion and government is being tested in new and urgent ways. From public education to civil rights to national security, religious language and ideology are increasingly shaping public policy and political debate.

On April 15th at 7 pm EDT, join Jews for a Secular Democracy and our cosponsors for a national conversation with John Fugelsang, author of the New York Times bestseller Separation of Church and Hate: A Sane Person’s Guide to Taking Back the Bible from Fundamentalists, Fascists, and Flock-Fleecing Frauds.

Building on a recent sold out in-person event in Tucson , this webinar brings the conversation to a national audience. With his signature blend of humor, historical insight, and deep knowledge of scripture, Fugelsang challenges the misuse of religion in politics and explores what the First Amendment actually protects.

In conversation with moderators Lynn Davis - Director Rabbi Joseph H. Gumbiner Community Action Project Tucson Jewish Museum & Holocaust Center - and Rev. ellie hutchison - Southern Arizona Community Organizer Arizona Faith Network - this program will examine:

  • The rise of Christian nationalism and how it differs from Christianity

  • The gap between the teachings of Jesus and their political use today

  • Why church–state separation protects both democracy and religion

  • What this moment means for religious minorities and pluralism

  • How individuals and communities can respond

This is a national program designed to equip participants of all faiths and no faith with knowledge, context, and practical insight at a pivotal moment in American public life. Don't miss this!
