Since 1939, Global Refuge has provided welcome and hope to more than three quarters of a million refugees from all over the world. This organization has provided services and undertaken many initiatives to help refugees and immigrants stabilize and transition to life in America.

Many in the LAMA Community might better know Global Refuge as Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services (LIRS)! For decades, LIRS was the hub for advocacy and service relating to migration and refugee issues, and many of us have stories of partnering with, working for, or receiving assistance from them.

This year, after careful consideration, the group has decided to change their name to Global Refuge to better reflect their identify, history, and Lutheran heritage. The new name speaks to the place of welcome they are creating for immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers the world over. The word ‘Global’ not only describes the people served — those in need, regardless of origin — but also conveys the scale of their vision — leading as a beacon of hope and welcome, setting the standard for grace and compassion for all of humanity. With its broad appeal and meaning, the word ‘Refuge’ conveys a sense of hope to all people, regardless of their faith traditions, just as their work does.

We are excited to join them in this new chapter! As Global Refuge continues their good and necessary work of welcoming the foreigner and loving the traveler, we hope you will join us in supporting and advocating alongside them.
