Happy Tuesday, Advocates!

Things continue to be busy at the Arizona State Legislature, and this week we are asking for your support on two bills. HB 2794 is an important piece of anti-hunger legislation and we are once again encouraging you to sign up in support of our housing bill, HB 2815.

HB 2794— Health School Meals for All

Read the bill text here.

This year, LAMA has identified school meal funding as one of our hunger priorities. During the pandemic, the state opted to provide enough funding for all of Arizona’s students to access healthy breakfasts and lunches. This has decreased school lunch debt, improved attendance, decreased childhood hunger, and improved classroom performance in our state. However, funding for this program expires in July 2024. HB 2794 would allocate an extra $0.70 per day per child meeting the income requirements for free and reduced meals, meaning that this program would get to continue through the next school year.

We urge you to sign up in favor of HB 2794, so that kids in our state do not have to go hungry!

The future of this bill is somewhat uncertain, as it has not had much traction in the House. However, we are still encouraging everyone to voice their support. This issue is sure to come up during budget negotiations, and lawmakers will be able to point to everyone who has supported this bill as evidence of this policy’s importance to the community.

HB 2815— Yes in God’s Back Yard CORRECTION

Last week, we encouraged you to weigh in on HB2815, Yes In God’s Back Yard, which allows houses of worship to construct affordable housing on their properties even if they are not zoned for residential use. However, we accidentally published the wrong bill number! This week, we are again encouraging you to support this bill HB 2815. To learn more about this bill and why we support it, please see last weeks RTS alert.
