Lutheran Day at the Legislature
Thursday, January 18, 2024
9:00 am - 1:00pm
Every year, Lutherans (and friends!) from across the state of Arizona gather at the Capitol to advocate on pressing issues and timely legislation. This year, more than 125 Lutherans advocated on all the LAMA legislative policy priorities for 2024, asking our representatives to keep these issues in mind as we move into the session.
This year, we represented 24 out of our states 30 legislative districts and met with more than 30 lawmakers about the need for policies addressing hunger, voting access, water use, and housing.
We began our day with prayers and remarks from Bishop Deborah Hutterer, Sen. Lela Alston (LD05), Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, our emcee Rev. Brian Weinberger, among others. After taking a group photo, we met with our fellow district members, and headed inside to our appointments.
Between appointments, we gathered in the Senate majority caucus room, where we shared lunch. Several lawmakers and staff stopped in to share our meal with us — special thanks to Representative Analise Ortiz (LD24), Representative Stacey Travers (LD12), and Senator Ken Bennett (LD01) for taking time to address all of us!
A special thanks is owed to our District Coordinators! This year, we worked with many members of the LAMA community to coordinate with their district members and make appointments with their lawmakers. The involvement of our Coordinators added a personal touch to our advocacy and gave us all the opportunity to make new relationships!
