Action Alert: Protect Arizonans’ Voting Process

From our partners at the Arizona Faith Network comes this action alert on HCR2056, legislation that erodes voter accessibility.

URGENT: HCR 2056 ERODES VOTER ACCESSIBILITY

All year, we have been tracking and advocating against legislation that would make voting unnecessarily harder in Arizona. Thanks to your advocacy, bills like HB 2547 and HCR 2032 have not been enacted. Now, lawmakers have turned to an omnibus ballot referral that would impact most Arizona voters who depend on early voting and benefit from vote centers in their communities.

HCR 2056 would bypass the governor's desk and put this threat to democracy directly on the November ballot. If approved by voters, the proposal would decimate voter accessibility for many Arizonans, especially the 75% of us who depend on early voting to make our voices heard. HCR 2056 will also lead to longer lines on election day and result in more ballots being rejected for arbitrary reasons.

Some of the most harmful provisions of HCR 2056 include:

  • Eliminating vote centers, which allow voters to use any polling location in their county, instead of needing to report to a specific precinct.

  • No longer allowing caregivers, family members, and spouses to drop off ballots for loved ones on election day.

  • Requiring on-site tabulation of early ballots, a costly and burdensome process that would strain already scarce county resources, without speeding up results.

  • Mandating voter ID for early ballot drop-offs, even though identification is already required to request an early ballot.

Tell lawmakers to protect voter accessibility, not upend it! Ask them to oppose HCR 2056.

This referral would severely impact already marginalized communities, especially low income folks, people living with disabilities, and those who commute long distances for work. HCR 2056 threatens commonsense and long-standing election procedures that most Arizonans support and use to cast their ballot.

All Arizona voters – including working families, people with disabilities, and students – deserve a robust and accessible early voting system. Act now and urge senators to oppose HCR 2056.
