ELCA Advocacy Action Alert: Urge the Senate to Expand the CTC
A few weeks ago, we let you know that the Child Tax Credit expansion passed in the House of Representatives! This was a definitive victory for us, and now it is time to push the bill through the Senate. The following action alert comes to us from the federal ELCA Advocacy Office:
With tax season underway, urge the Senate to pass a bipartisan tax package now!
Time is running short as the 2023 tax filing season is underway. Urge your senators to pass the bipartisan tax package - a positive step in the right direction that could give essential relief to many families right away.
At the end of January, the House of Representatives passed a 357-70 tax package that includes a modest expansion of the Child Tax Credit (CTC), development incentives for low-income housing, and tax breaks for businesses among other measures. By some estimates, the bill would help develop over 200,000 new affordable housing units, lift over 400,000 children out of poverty, and positively impact 3 million other children across the United States.
Over the last year, hundreds of Lutherans have called on Congress to expand the Child Tax Credit and work harder to address the affordable housing crisis in our communities. This comes as new data shows that family homelessness rose over 17% over the last year – and as many ministries report struggles meeting demand for housing and food assistance. Our voices are needed again.
Though the bill passed the House of Representatives by a very large bipartisan margin, the situation in the Senate is more challenging, with several senators expressing reluctance to take up the measure. Lutheran and faith voices can make a critical difference on this matter and help this bill make it to the president’s desk.
